Roofing Fire Ratings Explained: What Class A, B, and C Mean for Your Home
Most homeowners never think about how their roof would hold up to fire — until it’s time to pick out shingles and the spec sheet mentions a “Class A” rating. Fire ratings are one of the most overlooked parts of a roofing decision, so let’s spell them out plainly.
What a Roofing Fire Rating Actually Measures
Roofing materials are tested for how well they resist fire coming from outside the home — think wind-blown embers from a nearby structure or brush fire — under the ASTM E108 / UL 790 standard. The test looks at how far flames spread across the roof and whether the fire can penetrate to the deck below. The results fall into three classes.
Class A — the highest rating
Class A materials offer the most protection. They stand up to severe exposure and are designed to keep flames from spreading more than about six feet across the roof surface. Most quality fiberglass-asphalt shingles, as well as metal and concrete tile, carry a Class A rating.
- Class B — resists moderate fire exposure and limits flame spread to roughly eight feet.
- Class C — resists light exposure only, with flame spread up to about thirteen feet.
- Unrated — some older or budget materials carry no rating at all.
Why Class A Matters in North Texas

Always check the manufacturer’s specifications — the fire class is listed right on the product data sheet.
