What Hail Actually Does to a Roof in DFW
North Texas sits in one of the most active hail corridors in the country. Most years bring at least one storm worth paying attention to — and the damage hail leaves behind is often invisible from your driveway until it turns into a leak. Understanding what’s actually happening to your roof helps you act before a small problem becomes an expensive one.
Hail doesn’t just dent — it ages your roof early
An asphalt shingle protects your home through two layers working together: a tough fiberglass mat and the granules bonded to its surface. Those granules are the roof’s sunscreen — they shield the asphalt from UV. When hail strikes, it does two things:
- Bruising: the impact fractures the mat beneath the surface. You often can’t see a bruise, but you can feel it — a soft spot, like a bruise on fruit. A bruised shingle has lost structural integrity even if it looks fine.
- Granule loss: the impact knocks granules loose, exposing the asphalt underneath to the sun. From that point, that spot ages faster than the rest of the roof.
Neither of these necessarily leaks today. That’s exactly why hail damage is dangerous — it quietly shortens your roof’s lifespan, and the bill often arrives a year or two later.
Wind comes with the hail
The same storms bring wind that lifts and creases shingles, breaks the adhesive seal strips that hold them down, and tears flashing around chimneys and vents. A creased shingle is compromised even after it lays back down. Lifted shingles let wind-driven rain underneath.
How to spot it from the ground
You won’t catch everything from the ground, but these are worth watching for after a storm:
- granules collecting in gutters or at the bottom of downspouts;
- dents or “bruises” on metal surfaces — gutters, vents, AC unit fins, window screens, fence caps;
- shingles that look scuffed, cracked, or out of alignment;
- any new interior water staining.
If your neighborhood was in a storm’s path, it’s worth an inspection even if nothing looks wrong — because with hail, “looks fine from down here” and “is fine” are two very different things.
What to do next
Document the date of the storm and any visible signs, then get a professional inspection. At Banner, a storm assessment is free and hands-on, with drone support where a roof is unsafe to walk. We document what we find in the formats insurance carriers commonly request and provide a written scope — so you have an accurate record before you make any decisions. If you file a claim, the claim stays yours to manage; our job is the roofing work and the documentation, not negotiating with your carrier.
From there, the fix follows our usual order: repair what can be repaired, and replace only when the damage genuinely warrants it. For storm-specific help, see our Storm Damage Repair page.
